Thrush (vaginal candidiasis) is a common disease of the female genital organs. Many women are familiar with the unpleasant symptoms of thrush – cheesy or thick creamy discharge of white color (hence the name of this disease “thrush”), vaginal itching, irritation, discomfort.
The scientific name of thrush is vaginal candidiasis (from the Latin name of a microscopic fungus of the genus Candida, which causes unpleasant symptoms).
Vaginal candidiasis is not a sexually transmitted disease.
A small amount of Candida fungi is constantly present in the female body (on the skin, in the mouth, in the intestines and in the genital tract), but the disease of candidiasis does not always occur – usually under the influence of certain trigger factors that can cause such rapid reproduction of these fungi, that they crowd out the normal microflora of the vagina.
